About the Order of Malta

Upholding human dignity and caring for people in need. The Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) is one of the oldest institutions of Western and Christian civilisation. A lay religious order of the Catholic Church since 1113 and a subject of international law, the SMOM has diplomatic relations with over 100 states and the European Union, and permanent observer status at the United Nations. It is neutral, impartial and apolitical.

Our Mission and Vision

The order of Malta Clinic remains true to the Order of Malta’s inspiring principles set out nearly a thousand years ago: “Tuitio Fidei et Obsequium Pauperum” - Defence of the Faith and Care of the Poor and the Suffering.

Members of the Order recognize the image of God in every single individual and are obliged to work wherever the God-given dignity of human life is endangered. The Order of Malta Clinic will make this reality by providing medical and social services to the most disadvantaged in Timor-Leste.

Our Work so Far in Timor-Leste

Between its inception on November 7, 2017, and December 2023, SMOM Medical Clinic has delivered free medical assistance to a total of 58,471 individuals, encompassing both new patients and those returning for follow-up care. Operating seamlessly from Monday to Friday, the clinic has evolved into a cornerstone of healthcare provision in Dili, the capital city.

A significant milestone occurred on April 7, 2022, marked by the introduction of the Mobile Clinic—a strategic outreach endeavor targeting underserved villages within Dili. This program aims to bridge critical gaps in medical access across these areas.
